What is it?

Deaf Aotearoa’s Employment service is a nationwide service focused on getting Deaf and hard-of-hearing people into successful employment.

It includes pre-employment support and in-work support for both the Deaf person and employers.

The Employment service offers support for:

  • Deaf and hard-of-hearing people to get a job
  • Deaf and hard-of-hearing people to remain in their job
  • employers to understand more about employing Deaf people, including information on Deaf culture and funding for New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) interpreters in the workplace.

How does it work?

For Deaf and Hard of Hearing

Deaf Aotearoa Facilitators work alongside Deaf and hard-of-hearing people to identify employment goals and develop plans to achieve those goals.

Facilitators provide a range of information and respect the decisions of the Deaf and hard-of-hearing person. Facilitators can provide support with:

  • job seeking
  • applying for Workbridge funding
  • ensuring New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) interpreting services are provided at your job interviews and at work
  • networking
  • checking what skills are needed to achieve goals
  • looking at study and training options
  • researching on funding options
  • information on accessing training or study funding.

For Employers

Deaf Aotearoa Facilitators engage with employers to share information on successfully employing Deaf and hard-of-hearing people and harnessing the full potential of Deaf employees.

Facilitators can provide:

  • information and training on Deaf awareness and NZSL
  • information on funding sources for NZSL interpreters in the workplace.
