Support for families as fuel prices rise

Fuel prices have increased because of the conflict in the Middle East. Higher fuel prices can make everyday life more expensive. This is hard for people who need a car to get to work, take children to school, or travel to important places.

What support is being provided

From 1 April 2026, the Government is increasing the in-work tax credit. The in-work tax credit is money paid by Inland Revenue.

It is for families:

  • with children;
  • where at least one parent is in paid work;
  • who are not receiving a main benefit, or a student allowance, at the same time.

How much extra money families will get

The payment will increase by up to $50 each week for eligible families. This extra money helps families:

  • with low-to-middle incomes;
  • manage higher living costs.

How long the support will last

The increase is temporary. This means it will stop:

  • on 31 March 2027; or
  • when the price of 91 octane petrol stays below $3 a litre for four weeks in a row.

Whichever happens first.

What families need to do

Most families do not need to do anything.

If a family already receives the in-work tax credit:

  • Inland Revenue will send the family an updated Notice of Entitlement. This document explains what they will receive.
  • the extra amount will be paid automatically.
  • weekly payments will increase from 7 April 2026.
  • fortnightly payments will increase from 14 April 2026.
  • payments received at the end of the year will still include the increased entitlement amount, for those that are eligible.

If families are not receiving the payment

Families who think they may be eligible can use an online calculator on the Inland Revenue website: https://www.ird.govt.nz/working-for-families/estimate-your-entitlement or here: https://tinyurl.com/vjr2y2et
