Netsafe Helpline

Netsafe is an independent non-profit organisation that provides free and confidential support to people in New Zealand. We provide practical tools, education materials, and advice to prevent and manage online harm.

If you are concerned about the immediate safety of you or someone else, please call 111.

The Netsafe Helpline

Whether you’re dealing with online harassment, a scam, or you just want advice for accessing the internet safely, we can help. Our free and confidential helpline operates 7 days a week.

When you contact Netsafe, our team will determine if your report relates to the Harmful Digital Communications Act 2015 (HDCA) or another online safety area.

The Harmful Digital Communications Act was introduced to tackle some of the ways people use technology to hurt others.

The HDCA provides some guiderails to appropriate online behaviour. These are referred to as the Communication Principles.

Digital communication should not:

  1. disclose sensitive personal facts about an individual
  1. be threatening, intimidating, or menacing
  1. be grossly offensive to a reasonable person in the position of the affected individual
  1. be indecent or obscene
  1. be used to harass an individual
  1. make a false allegation
  1. contain a matter that is published in breach of confidence
  1. incite or encourage anyone to send a message to an individual for the purpose of causing harm to the individual
  1. incite or encourage an individual to commit suicide
  1. denigrate an individual by reason of colour, race, ethnic or national origins, religion, gender, sexual orientation or disability

If we believe your report may relate to the HDCA, then one of our team will contact you to understand more about what has happened.

We will let you know what resolution options may be available for you and outline how we can help resolve the harm.

If your report does not fall within the remit of the Act, Netsafe can still provide advice and guidance. We can help you with advice and support before harm happens, by directing you to some of our other products and services, or our free online resources.

Netsafe will not do anything without your consent.
