The Donald Beasley Institute conducts disabled person-led monitoring of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) on behalf of the New Zealand Disabled People’s Organisations Coalition (DPO Coalition).
The UNCRPD is an international agreement that sets out what the New Zealand Government must do to make sure disabled people have the same human rights as everybody else. It is important to understand if, and how well, this is happening.
Since 2018, we have undertaken four monitoring cycles on disabled people’s access to: housing, housing from the perspectives of family and whānau of disabled people, health and wellbeing, and disability supports and services.
In our most recent monitoring cycle, we talked to disabled people and their families, whānau, aiga, and close supporters about disability supports and services. We wanted to know what disabled people thought about existing disability supports and services (DSS), changes to the disability support system, Whaikaha Ministry of Disabled People, and how these changes impacted disabled people’s human rights under the UNCRPD.
