Disabled people, whānau hauā and tangata whaikaha Māori already adapt every day, and that lived experience is essential as Tāmaki Makaurau faces more floods, heat, storms and slips.
This webinar introduces the new Disability-Led Climate Adaptation Pilot – a partnership between Auckland Council, a Grant Advisory Panel and implementation partners. The pilot will fund disabled-led ideas that support communities to live well between extreme weather events, not just respond to emergencies. Learn what adaptation can look like and how disabled leadership informs local solutions.
This pilot uses participatory grantmaking. Disabled people help design the funding process, and the Grant Advisory Panel recommends which projects receive support. A total of $150,000 is available for disabled-led climate adaptation projects, placing lived experience at the centre of decision-making.
Learn what adaptation can look like, how it protects places we value, and how disabled leadership is shaping local solutions, including: not building or placing people, homes, taonga or community spaces in areas likely to flood or erode. Also: reducing erosion, using nature-based solutions, improving drainage, and guiding water safely with simple features like swales.
