Employment: Breaking Down Barriers to Workplace Inclusion

Bryan’s Path to Workplace Support

When Bryan’s employer raised concerns about his medical condition, upcoming surgery, and safety at work, Bryan and his whānau knew they needed support to navigate the situation. They wanted to make sure Bryan felt safe, informed and confident about what was ahead – and that his employer could understand his perspective clearly.

That’s when they reached out to our Employment Service. With guidance from our team, Bryan was able to access clear, direct communication and fully understand options available to him.

Lisa, one of the Adults & Seniors Facilitators at Deaf Aotearoa, met with Bryan to learn about his concerns and hopes for a positive outcome. Together, they mapped out a plan to help Bryan and his workplace prepare for his upcoming surgery, understand what recovery would look like, and develop a clear return to work pathway.

Lisa then contact Bryan’s employer to explain how Deaf Aotearoa could support the process, and arranged for NZSL interpreters to be present at all meetings to ensure full access to communication. When they employer requested a workplace safety assessment, Lisa helped engage an external provider to carry this out.

Throughout the process Lisa stayed in close contact with Bryan and his whānau, making sure they felt informed and supported every step of the way. A structured three-step assessment was introduced, giving Bryan clarity and reassurance during a time of uncertainty,

With the right supports in place, Bryan returned to his full duties – safe, confident and well prepared.

Whānau feedback:

“Felt relieved you are supporting.”

“We can now focus on his health.”

“Employer can now liaise with Deaf Aotearoa on the employment side.”

“Communication organised for clear understanding.”

Summary of Impact

The Deaf Aotearoa Employment Service continues to break down barriers for Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals across Aotearoa. Our facilitators provide a wraparound service that supports Deaf people to prepare for and sustain meaningful employment.

This includes job-readiness coaching, CV development, interview preparation, upskilling, and identifying suitable job opportunities together with Deaf service users. We also work closely with whānau, employers, and external providers to ensure Deaf employees have equitable access to safety, communication, and wellbeing at work.

Through culturally responsive support and NZSL-accessible communication, the team empowers Deaf individuals to navigate workplace challenges and thrive in their chosen careers. Bryan’s journey is one example of our ongoing commitment to inclusion, advocacy, and partnership, ensuring Deaf people are informed, supported, and valued in every workplace.
