Annual Report 2022-2023

Deaf Aotearoa Holdings Ltd Chairperson’s Report

This year has been a constructive but challenging time for Deaf Aotearoa. Deaf Aotearoa is growing, and we have experienced both successes and challenges. The Deaf Aotearoa Holdings Limited Board (DAHL) joined with the Executive Board, Youth Board and Management Team early in 2023 for a two-day strategic planning meeting. This was the first time for many people on the Boards and Management Team to have robust discussions and clarification on what we do and why we do it. This has led to stronger collaboration between the Boards, CEO and Management Team.

DAHL has the responsibility to monitor and safeguard the organisation to ensure its sustainability, and to consider risks and opportunities. The Board meets an average of five meetings a year. This work makes sure the strategic priorities as set by the Deaf Aotearoa Executive Board are achieved. We know Deaf Aotearoa is growing. In the 2022/23 financial year, Deaf Aotearoa has returned an operating deficit of ($50,288). This deficit was planned for and expected. After many years of returning a surplus, Deaf Aotearoa has established strong financial reserves and is in a sound financial position overall. We are going through a period of strong investment and development, for example the iSign Interpreter Graduate Programme, and will likely return a deficit again in 2023/24 while we establish this and other new initiatives. The CEO and management team have presented a strong business plan and forecasts for the next few years which gives the DAHL Board confidence that the organisation will remain in a sound financial position.

As the Chair, I enjoyed my second year on the DAHL Board and thank you to Kevin O’Neill, Gail Stevens, Craig Findsen, and Joanne Klaver, for their ongoing governance commitment and contribution to the Board. And to Lachlan Keating as CEO of Deaf Aotearoa for his highlevel management oversight and support to staff.

We would like to acknowledge the Executive Board – Joanne Klaver (President), Craig Findsen (Vice President), Anton Sammons (Chair), Emmie Bensley and Ryan Cassidy for their contribution and support to DAHL. There has been a lot of collaboration between the Boards throughout the year and this strengthens our governance relationships. We will face another challenging year, but have the determination and motivation to make sure Deaf Aotearoa is on track.
