Adele Carpinter’s impact on Deaf Aotearoa and the establishment of the First Signs service is both profound and enduring. As a visionary and change maker, Adele recognised early on that Deaf Aotearoa was uniquely positioned to serve the families with deaf children and the wider Deaf community with authenticity and heart. She understood the transformative power of connecting families with Deaf children to Deaf adult role models, offering not just guidance, but a sense of belonging and possibility.
Adele played a pivotal role in developing frameworks that would enable the establishment of First Signs and support families during the early years, particularly in the wake of the Human Rights Commission’s landmark inquiry, A New Era in the Right to Sign.
Adele’s unwavering commitment, thoughtful leadership, and deep compassion have left a lasting legacy that continues to empower the families through the work we do through First Signs. We are deeply grateful for everything Adele gave to this work—thank you, Adele.
A celebration of life will be held at Paremata Boating Club, 110 Paremata Road, Paremata at 2.00pm on 29th June. NZSL interpreters will be present.
I know Adele from her time in Sana’a, Yemen, when her goodness brought light to us all. She was loved by her neighbours in the Old City of Sana’a, and especially by ‘my’ family there (they ‘adopted’ me), the Sayrafis, who still live in the house opposite Adele’s.
We hadn’t been in touch for far too long. But Adele has been on our minds even more so than usual recently. Maybe – though this sounds whimsical – she came to bid us farewell.
Rest in peace, our dear, sweet friend, knowing that you’ve left loving memories with people far away in place and time, but joined now with all your family and friends in remembering you.
