Expression of Interest – Kelston Visioning Project Advisory Group

Kia ora Deaf community,

We WANT you! Help shape the future of education in the Kelston suburb.

This video is about Kelston Visioning Project ( KVP) and why we are seeking Expressions of Interest, from the Deaf community.

5 schools in the Kelston area are working with the Ministry of Education to look at changing how education is delivered in this area.

Ko Taku Reo is one of those schools.

For more information about KVP – look at this video: https://kvpschoolnz.wordpress.com

Ko Taku Reo is nationwide, but still has strong historical ties to Kelston, and presence across Kelston, which we want to maintain.

KVP has two groups: One for the schools’ principals/senior leaders, and one for representatives from the schools’ Boards, known as the KVP Advisory Group.

Previously, we have had a Ko Taku Reo Board member in this group. But now as Ko Taku Reo has a Commissioner and an Advisory Group, we are seeking expressions of interest from both the Ko Taku Reo Advisory Group and the Auckland Deaf community.

The KVP Advisory Group has a role in influencing the decisions about how education will be delivered in Kelston.

There are two options being considered:

  1. Kelston Boys High School moves to the site of Kelston Girls College, or
  2. Kelston Girls College moves to the site of Kelston Boys High School.

Plans are being developed to see what each option could look like.

Ko Taku Reo’s 2 representatives would be expected to influence/ensure the perspective of Deaf education within the Kelston area, and the significance of Ruaumoko Marae for the Maori Deaf community.

They meet 2 times every term. NZSL interpreters are provided.

The ideal Ko Taku Reo representatives for the KVP Advisory Group would be people who:

  • are Deaf
  • have knowledge of the history of Deaf education in this area
  • Have strong understanding of tikanga
  • Can put students’ needs first
