AUCKLAND FLOOD UPDATE #26: 7th February 2023

Waste collection continues across the Auckland region

The emergency response to the flooding in Tāmaki Makaurau is well into its second week and the focus remains on collecting flood damaged items from households as quickly as possible.

We’re also keeping one eye on the weather forecast with a potentially significant weather system currently developing in the Tropics. We’ll be keeping in close contact with MetService in the coming days and will update as necessary.

Auckland weather forecast

MetService is forecasting a settled run for the Auckland region this week, apart from the odd passing/light shower on Wednesday and Friday.

There are no Severe Weather Watches or Warnings in force, or likely to be issued, between now and midnight Friday.

MetService is keeping an eye on the developing weather system and its potential impact on New Zealand.

We will be in regular communication with them throughout the course of the week and will provide updates as required.

Managing flood-damaged items

We are aware there are still large amounts of flood-damaged items to be collected.

Our teams are working at pace to get these items collected as quickly as possible, and we thank everyone for their patience at this time.

If you are unable to take your waste to a transfer station, please leave your flood-damaged items at the kerbside to be collected.

Please make sure any items left on kerbside are secure and placed away from our stormwater drains.

Please remember to take care as you remove flood-damaged items from your home. Any items that have been in contact with flood waters will be contaminated and can pose serious health risks.

Our transfer stations remain extremely busy, and we urge people to call ahead and let us know you’re coming. Queues are likely so please bring snacks and water, and remember to be kind to our teams on the ground. They are working hard to process everyone as quickly as possible.

Rapid assessment update

As of midday 7 February:

  • 276 homes or buildings have red placards/stickers
  • 1590 homes or buildings have yellow placards/stickers
  • 2511 homes or buildings have white placards/stickers.

If you feel your property requires an inspection, and you have not yet been visited, please call Auckland Council on 0800 22 22 00 to request one.

Transport and travel

There are still roads throughout the Auckland region with significant damage and 20 roads remain closed. You can get the most up-to-date information on road closures and public transport services at www.at.govt.nz.

Most bus services are operating including rail replacements. Due to the severe weather conditions, further last-minute cancellations may occur. Due to road closures and detours, journey times may be longer.
