Matariki – Living by the Stars

Yesterday Ko Taku Reo brought together the Māori Deaf community, staff and students to see a presentation by Dr Rangi Mātāmua.

Jared from our Information and Resources Team attended – in this video he reflects on the day.

Thank you Ko Taku Reo Deaf Education NZ, for the opportunity to come together.

Thank you Dr Rangi Mātāmua

  1. Would love to know if there are nzsl signs for each of the stars so both hearing and Deaf can sign along with the ‘miss nicky says waitia video’

  2. Kia ora,

I am a Kindergarten kaiako (teacher) in Wellington and I would like to introduce the following waiata
to the tamariki this week so we can practice it and perform it to our whānau later in the year. I see in your video by Jared from 2022, he mentions that there were some signs developed to use for the 9 whetu of Matariki. Can you point me in the right direction as to where I would find these? I am aiming to use more sign with the tamariki I work with and would like to be as accurate as possible with the signs I am introducing to them. My aim is that we learn the appropriate 9 signs to use along with this waiata.

    Ngā mihi,
