This video has been produced in response to COVID-19 misinformation in the community. From discussions with Deaf Community members we have found that some people object to getting the vaccine because they have been misinformed. They have been getting their information from Facebook Groups and from talking with other people.
It is important that you have access to correct information. Deaf Aotearoa works with the Ministry of Health and Unite Against COVID to receive official and accurate information for translation into NZSL videos for the Deaf Community. Deaf Aotearoa staff do not do their own research or look for information to translate.
Perhaps a friend of yours has shared a video with some information about COVID or about the vaccine. If you are unsure of the information, you can ask them where they got their information from. It is important that the information you receive is correct.
For example, if there is a river and you need to build a bridge. It is important that you have the right information so that you can build a safe bridge. You would approach a bridge engineer. They are the right people for the job because they have the experience, the qualifications, and it is their job to do this work. You would not go to Facebook or YouTube to source information about how to build a bridge. The people on Facebook might claim to have the knowledge and experience, but the reality is they are probably limited in terms of knowledge and experience.
It is important that you get information from the right people, whether you need to build a bridge and employ an engineer, or if you wish to learn NZSL you would seek a NZSL tutor, or to build a house you would employ a builder, and if you needed health information you would visit the GP or doctor, or visit the Ministry of Health website.
It is important that you have access to the right information. At Deaf Aotearoa we want all members of the Deaf Community to be in good health and to receive accurate health information in NZSL.
