Our Service co-ordinators meet Deaf and hearing impaired Senior Citizens in most Deaf Aotearoa offices in New Zealand. Several different information are being provided for example:
- What Deaf Aotearoa can provide for our Deaf senior citizens members
- What is available out-there for them i.e. for everyday's life (retirement plans, financial assistance, recreational outings and activities, etc)
In bigger cities, there is a regular gathering for Deaf Senior Citizens in Auckland Deaf Society (in Balmoral) and Canterbury Deaf Society (in Christchurch city). For the further details of gathering dates, times and physical address, send an email here.
With fast development of technology, our Community Relations Officers (CRO) will be happy to explain senior citizens in sign language on different technology i.e.
- how to use mobile phone to send and receive text messages
- how to understand captioning programme on television (using Teletext)
- how to send and receive emails including attaching a photo/file
- how to use internet to find information on the website / computer
- finally, how to use Video Relay Service (VRS) to make a video-phone call
